Gutter Cleaning

  • What happens if I don’t get my gutters cleaned?

If your gutters are not cleaned, water can overflow from them which can cause a number of problems. Instead of going where it is meant to, water will fall along the foundation of the building. This can soften the soil under and around it which may cause foundation cracks. Water damage is never a good thing, but at worst it can lead to structural failure in a building. Save yourself some money and book yourself a gutter clean today.

  • How often should I get my gutter cleaned?

Like many other questions, the answer is, how long is a piece of string! Many experts recommend cleaning your gutters at least twice a year – once in the late spring and once in the late summer/early autumn. But there are varying factors that would determine the answer, e.g. trees surrounding the property or roof tile type or even a particularly stormy season of weather. Given the famous statistic about trees per head in Sheffield, leaf build up can be problematic in our gutters but other things like old concrete tiles can mean a lot of moss build up which runs into the gutter in winds & rain. We offer discounts for repeat bookings of gutter cleans.

  • Can blocked gutters cause leaks?

By not clearing a blocked gutter you may be causing damage to your home, including roof leaks. Water will always find the path of least resistance and where the water is no longer able to flow freely through the gutter, it will find a new route down your home, often causing damage if left untreated. The build up of water from a blocked gutter can cause the roof to rot, weakening its structural integrity and eventually causing problems inside the home. Cleaning a clogged gutter can be messy work so why not book Steel City Gutters to do it for you?

  • How can I tell my gutters need cleaning?

There are 6 tell tail signs:

1. There is water spilling over from the gutters.

2. A gutter is sagging under the excess weight.

3. There is staining on exterior walls.

4. There is standing water near your home's foundation.

5. You spot a number of birds around your roof - blocked gutters provide great nest material.

6. Plants are growing out of your gutter!

  • Is a gutter clean that important?

As with all home maintenance, regular cleaning is crucial to preserving good gutters. As noted above, a gutter blocked with leaves, sticks and other debris can cause damage to your roof or to the interior or exterior of your home. Blocked gutters also make nice homes for pests, including rodents!
